หลอเล่อหลินเกิดเมื่อวันที่ 20 ตุลาคม ค.ศ. 1948 ที่เฉาโจว มณฑลกวางตุ้ง ประเทศจีน เมื่ออายุได้ 14 ปี เขาได้อพยพพร้อมครอบครัวไปยังมาเก๊า งานแรก ๆ ของเขาคือการทำงานในโรงงานพลาสติกและติดตามคนขับรถบรรทุกไปส่งสินค้า หลังจากสำเร็จการศึกษาจากโรงเรียนมัธยม เขาได้เปิดบริษัทท่องเที่ยวขนาดเล็กและเป็นมัคคุเทศก์ด้วย เมื่ออายุ 23 ปี เขาได้สมัครเข้าเรียนการแสดงที่สถาบันศิลปะชอว์บราเดอร์ส

ตลอดระยะเวลาการทำงาน หลอเล่อหลินได้สร้างสรรค์ผลงานมากมายและเป็นที่ยอมรับในวงกว้าง โดยเฉพาะในบทบาททางโทรทัศน์
3.1. การเริ่มต้นอาชีพการแสดง
หลอเล่อหลินเริ่มต้นอาชีพการแสดงในฐานะนักแสดงละครเวทีในปี ค.ศ. 1965 และเป็นนักแสดงละครเพลงในปี ค.ศ. 1967 ก่อนที่จะเข้าสู่วงการภาพยนตร์ในบทบาทนักแสดงสมทบจากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง 恶客 (Evil Guest) ในปี ค.ศ. 1972 และเริ่มปรากฏตัวในละครโทรทัศน์ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1975
3.2. อาชีพทางโทรทัศน์
หลอเล่อหลินเริ่มต้นอาชีพทางโทรทัศน์ในปี ค.ศ. 1975 กับสถานีโทรทัศน์Commercial Television (CTV) ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้ยุติการดำเนินงานไปแล้ว ด้วยความต้องการโอกาสที่ดีกว่า เขาจึงย้ายไปทำงานเป็นนักแสดงสมทบกับTVB เป็นเวลาหนึ่งปี แต่หลังจากร่วมแสดงในละครเพียงเรื่องเดียว เขาก็กลับไปที่ CTV หลังจาก CTV ยุติการดำเนินงานในปี ค.ศ. 1978 หลอเล่อหลินได้เซ็นสัญญาเป็นนักแสดงกับAsia Television (ATV) ในปี ค.ศ. 1979 ซึ่งเป็นอีกหนึ่งสถานีที่ปัจจุบันได้ยุติการดำเนินงานไปแล้วเช่นกัน ในปี ค.ศ. 1990 เขาได้ออกจาก ATV และกลับมาเซ็นสัญญากับ TVB อีกครั้ง ด้วยความนิยมของละคร TVB ทั้งในและต่างประเทศ ทำให้หลอเล่อหลินกลายเป็นบุคคลสำคัญในวงการโทรทัศน์ที่ได้รับการยอมรับมากขึ้น
